Producing the Today programme

steviefm

Around this time last year I wrote an article about my then job, which was managing the social media and website for BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. Not long after publishing it, I was given the chance to to move off the online team and become a producer on the actual radio show. I thought now might be a good time to write an updated blog entry about what this job involves and give some examples of what I’ve been doing for the past year for anyone who might be interested in hearing more about the behind-the-scenes mechanics of the show.

mishal

First of all, just to quash from the gate any suspicion that I landed this dream job by being some kind of ruthlessly ambitious careerist, let me say that this is a role that I never envisioned myself doing. Not because I didn’t want to, quite the opposite, but because working for a programme…

I have known the inexorable sadness of pencils…

—Theodore Roethke, “Dolor”

The torn coat sleeve to the table. The steel pen to the ink. Write! Write! Be it truth or fable. Words! Words! Clerks never think.

—Benjamin Browne Foster, Down East Diary (1849)

They labored in poorly lit, smoky single rooms, attached to merchants and lawyers, to insurance concerns and banks. They had sharp penmanship and bad eyes, extravagant clothes but shrunken, unused bodies, backs cramped from poor posture, fingers callused by constant writing. When they were not thin, angular, and sallow, they were ruddy and soft; their paunches sagged onto their thighs.

Snapchat CEO meets with Saudi investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal

Gigaom

Could Snapchat, the red-hot messaging service that is reportedly working on a new funding round that will value the company at $19 billion or more, be getting some of that funding from billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal? It sure looks that way: the Saudi prince’s investment company put out a statement on the weekend saying that bin Talal met with Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and the two talked about a “potential business co-operation” between their companies.

Prince Alwaleed — whose full name is Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al Saud — is a member of the extended Saudi royal family, and a veteran investor who has a stake in social-web companies like Twitter and China’s JD.com, and a track record of investing early in technology players like Apple and AOL. As a number of sources have also pointed out, the prince recently sold his stake in News Corp. and…

Twitter has reportedly acquired livestreaming app Periscope

Gigaom

It looks like Twitter bought livestreaming app Periscope weeks ago, before competitor Meerkat went viral. Two outlets, Business Insider and Re/code, are reporting the news from their respective anonymous sources, but there’s no word on how much the deal closed for or confirmation from Twitter (I’ll update if I hear back). Periscope is still in private beta, but was rumored to have the same livestreaming capabilities that made Meerkat spread virally.

Fear, food and the internet of things at SXSW

Gigaom

Unfortunate timing means I’ll miss a huge chunk of this year’s South by Southwest Interactive festival happening in my hometown of Austin, Texas this year. I’m both saddened a bit relieved since it is my 14th year attending the festival, and it will be a nice to have a break. And yet … there are always so many chances to see something new and fun and mind-expanding.

This year looks like it will be no exception. As always, I’ve scanned through the list of panels, sessions and random parties hitting my inbox to get a sense of the annual themes. What also emerges is a pretty good picture of how the event and my city has changed since 2001 when I moved back (I think I started attending SXSW again in 2002 if you’re counting).

Most people are aware that the event has shifted from a grubby collection of do-gooder…
